چکیده

The authors propose to exploit the unique properties of surface plasmons to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of midinfrared photodetectors. The proposed photodetector consists of a slit in a metallic slab filled with absorptive semiconductor material. Light absorption in the slit is enhanced due to Fabry-Perot resonances. Further absorption enhancement is achieved by surrounding the slit with a series of periodic grooves that enable the excitation of surface plasmons that carry electromagnetic energy towards the slit. Using this scheme, they design and optimize a photodetector operating at 0=9.8 m with a roughly 250 times enhancement in the absorption per unit of volume of semiconductor material compared to conventional photodetectors operating at the same wavelength. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. Adjustable Plasmonic Bandgap in One-Dimensional Nanograting Based on Localized and Propagating Surface Plasmons

Compared to the long history of plasmonic gratings, there are only a few studies regarding the bandgap in the propagation of plasmonic surface waves. Considering the previous studies on interpretation of plasmonic bandgap formation, we discuss this phenomenon using the effect of both surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and localized surface plasmon (LSP) for our fabricated one-dimensional metallic-...

Plasmonic band gap structures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) adsorbed on biharmonic metallic grating structures was studied. Biharmonic metallic gratings include two different grating components, one acting as a coupler to excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), and the other forming a plasmonic band gap for the propagating SPPs. In the vicinity of the band edges, localized surface plasmons ...

Designer spoof surface plasmon structures collimate terahertz laser beams.

Surface plasmons have found a broad range of applications in photonic devices at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. In contrast, longer-wavelength surface electromagnetic waves, known as Sommerfeld or Zenneck waves, are characterized by poor confinement to surfaces and are therefore difficult to control using conventional metallo-dielectric plasmonic structures. However, patterning the surf...

CoupledC avity Distributed-Resonance Photodetectors

A new type of resonant enhanced photodetectors based on the one dimensional photonic bandgap is proposed. It can potentially overcome problems encountered in resonant-cavity-enhanced photodetectors. Resonating structures with very high quality factors and large free spectral ranges can be obtained by varying the optical parameters of the grating overlay without the presence of rigid design cons...

Nanoparticle-enhanced diffraction gratings for ultrasensitive surface plasmon biosensing.

Ultrasensitive surface bioaffinity sensors are created by the adsorption of gold nanoparticles onto gold diffraction gratings. An enhanced diffraction obtained in a surface plasmon resonance geometry is observed due to the optical coupling of the planar surface plasmons in the grating to the localized surface plasmons in the gold nanoparticles. As a first example, these nanoparticle grating bio...
